Lasery w stomatologii są coraz chętniej wykorzystywane praktycznie w każdej jej dziedzinie. Bywają stosowane w połączeniu z innymi metodami czy farmakoterapią lub jako jedyne narzędzia terapeutyczne – w niektórych sytuacjach laseroterapia okazuje się na tyle skuteczna, że zastosowanie zazwyczaj zalecanych w danej procedurze leków czy innych zabiegów jest zbędne. Lasery znakomicie sprawdzają się m.in. w procedurach biostymulacyjnych i z zakresu chirurgii jamy ustnej.

Do zabiegów tych stosuje się dwa różne rodzaje urządzeń:

• lasery miękkie, czyli takie, które wytwarzają wiązkę niskoenergetyczną (w zakresie fal o długości 630-1100 nm i o mocy 2-200 mW), nie uszkadzają tkanek, lecz penetrują je na głębokość nawet 6 cm (w stomatologii zazwyczaj do 1 cm), pobudzając przy okazji procesy metaboliczne, w tym produkcję energii w mitochondriach i białek w rybosomach;
