Większość zabiegów stomatologicznych to działania, podczas których na skutek ingerencji w tkanki i przerwania ciągłości śluzówki jamy ustnej oraz uszkodzenia naczyń krwionośnych dochodzi do krwawień. Jeśli wypływ krwi jest silny i gwałtowny, mówimy o krwotoku. Zwykłe krwawienia nie są groźne, ponieważ dzięki sprawnie działającym mechanizmom krzepnięcia wypływ krwi z naczyń dość szybko ustaje. W niektórych sytuacjach może dojść jednak do niebezpiecznego krwotoku. Krwotok może pojawić się podczas zabiegu lub już po nim; i to zarówno u osób mających genetycznie uwarunkowane problemy z krzepliwością krwi, jak i u osób zdrowych.

Możliwe przyczyny silnych krwawień dziąseł w jamie ustnej:

• Choroby krwi – najczęściej są to skazy krwotoczne (m.in. hemofilia) oraz białaczki. Podczas zabiegu mogą wystąpić krwawiące dziąsła, jeśli dojdzie do uszkodzenia śluzówki jamy ustnej, języka, wargi przez nieostrożność stomatologa lub w wyniku przypadkowego nagryzienia tkanek.
• Przyjmowane leki i produkty spożywcze – krwawienia nasilają się na skutek zjadania imbiru oraz przyjmowania preparatów zmniejszających krzepliwość krwi, zapobiegających powstawaniu zakrzepów. Najczęściej winowajcami nasilonych krwawień są środki z grupy niesteroidowych leków przeciwzapalnych, heparyna, antykoagulanty stosowane w profilaktyce i leczeniu zdarzeń zatorowo-zakrzepowych.
• Choroby przyzębia – tkanki objęte stanem zapalnym stają się podatne na uszkodzenia, rozpulchnione, a naczynia krwionośne są kruche i słabe. Cały obszar zajęty przez stan zapalny jest niczym głęboka rana pokryta cienką warstwą śluzówki.
• Nowotwory – rozrastająca się tkanka nowotworowa potrzebuje dużych ilości świeżej krwi. Z tego powodu guz otoczony jest własną siecią naczyń krwionośnych. Urazy lub zabiegi usunięcia zmiany nowotworowej mogą doprowadzić do obfitego krwawienia. Zmiany onkologiczne mogą też pęknąć podczas zabiegu – samoistnie lub w wyniku działania narzędzi. Tak może stać się w przypadku naczyniaka zlokalizowanego w jamie ustnej. Nowotwory jamy ustnej mogą być spowodowane m.in. przez alkohol lub palenie tytoniu. I te właśnie czynniki stanowią pierwotną przyczynę zwiększonego ryzyka wystąpienia krwotoku podczas zabiegów wykonywanych na tkance onkologicznie zmienionej lub w wyniku uszkodzenia/pęknięcia zmiany nowotworowej.
• Ekstrakcja zęba – jeśli zabieg był skomplikowany, doszło do uszkodzenia dużej ilości naczyń krwionośnych lub jednego większego, albo usunięcie zęba wymagało interwencji chirurgicznej i nacinania dziąsła, może pojawić się silne krwawienie. Teoretycznie powinno ono zaniknąć po 1-2 godzinach od zabiegu, ale w określonych uwarunkowaniach (np. kiedy pacjent przyjmuje leki zmniejszające krzepliwość krwi), może utrzymywać się zdecydowanie dłużej.
• Zabiegi implantologiczne – ryzyko wystąpienia krwotoku jest niskie, ale z racji tego, że to typowo chirurgiczna ingerencja, silne krwawienie może się pojawić, głównie na etapie osadzania wszczepu w dziąśle.
• Usunięcie skrzepu wytworzonego w zębodole po usuniętym lub utraconym zębie – skrzep działa jak tampon. Jeśli zbyt szybko zostanie usunięty, może pojawić się krwawienie, zazwyczaj silniejsze, od krwotoku podczas usuwania zęba doszło. Z tego powodu nie należy do 24 godzin po zabiegach intensywnie płukać jamy ustnej ani stosować płukanek ziołowych. Nie należy też przyjmować gorących lub bardzo ciepłych napojów i pokarmów płynnych, a pokarmy powinno się gryźć po stronie niepoddanej zabiegowi.
• Piercing w jamie ustnej – szczególnie niebezpieczne jest zakładanie biżuterii na język. To silnie unaczyniony organ. Przebicie naczyń krwionośnych może wywołać krwotok.
• Zakażenia bakteryjne (np. paciorkowcowe) lub zmiany polekowe (np. alergiczna skaza krwotoczna).
• Zabiegi operacyjne, jak np. uvulopalatofaryngoplastyka (UPPP) polegająca na usunięciu nadmiaru tkanek miękkich zawężających gardło, w tym części podniebienia miękkiego, łuków podniebienno – językowych oraz migdałków podniebiennych, czy uvulopalatoplastyka (UPP), zabieg obejmujący mniejszy obszar niż UPPP.
• Ciężka praca fizyczna, trening sportowy lub poród– w każdym przypadku może wzrastać ciśnienie krwi, czego skutkiem może być obfite krwawienie z jamy ustnej już po zabiegu.

Smak to jeden z podstawowych zmysłów. Jego odczuwanie i odróżnianie poszczególnych wariantów (słodki, słony, kwaśny, gorzki, pikantny) jest możliwe dzięki skomplikowanemu mechanizmowi przetwarzania bodźców chemicznych w elektryczne i odbywa się na kilkuetapowej ścieżce przewodnictwa nerwowego, której początek i koniec znajdują się w jamie ustnej. Zaburzenia smaku mogą być skutkiem nieprawidłowości na jednym z odcinków przekazywania bodźców i mogą mieć różne przyczyny i charakter. Odczuwanie smaku związane jest też z działaniem zmysłu węchu. Jeśli powonienie niedomaga, smak również nie jest odczuwany prawidłowo, choć sam zmysł smaku i droga smakowa działają dobrze. Dzieje się tak, ponieważ aby pokarm dobrze smakował, musimy odczuwać, jak pachnie. Same sprawnie działające kubki smakowe na języku nie wystarczą, aby rozkoszować się smakiem – dlatego powiedzenie, że „jemy” również oczami i nosem jest jak najbardziej słuszne.

Zaburzenia smaku mogą mieć charakter:

• Ilościowy, czyli z jaką intensywnością odczuwamy smak:
  • ageusia – brak odczuwania wszystkich smaków;
  • hipogeusia – osłabione odczuwanie smaku;
  • hypergeusia – zbyt silne odczuwanie smaku, nadwrażliwość smakowa (wyraźna u kobiet w ciąży czy w czasie miesiączki).
• Jakościowy, czyli w jaki sposób odczuwamy smak:
  • parageusia – nieprawidłowe odczuwanie smaku;
  • cacogeusia – smak odczuwany jako nieprzyjemny;
  • phantogeusia – omamy smakowe, czyli odczuwanie smaku pomimo braku bodźca uruchamiającego ścieżkę smakową.

Zaburzenia smaku mogą być:

• Wrodzone – to efekt nieprawidłowości genetycznych, których skutkiem jest niewykształcenie kubków smakowych.
• Nabyte – tu przyczyn może być wiele:
  • Stany zapalne w jamie ustnej, np. po radioterapii.
