Szczoteczka do zębów minimum dwukrotnie w ciągu doby trafia do jamy ustnej. Wraz z nią wprowadzasz pastę do zębów i… miliony bakterii, które przebywają na główce, rączce i we włosiu akcesorium. Jak wykazały badania przeprowadzone w różnych placówkach naukowych, m.in. na uniwersytecie w Manchesterze, na szczoteczkach może znajdować się nawet 100 mln drobnoustrojów. Liczba ta zaskakuje tak samo, jak różnorodność gatunkowa mikroflory zasiedlającej podstawowy przyrząd do higieny jamy ustnej.

Drobnoustroje, które mogą znajdować się na szczoteczkach do zębów:

• Bakterie fekalne – to przede wszystkim Enterobacteriaceae oraz Pseudomonadaceae z coli na czele. Bakterie te trafiają na szczoteczkę, kiedy akcesorium przechowywane jest zbyt blisko muszli toaletowej, zapomina się o zamykaniu klapy sedesowej podczas spłukiwania wody lub dotyka szczoteczki rękoma, które nie były umyte po korzystaniu z toalety. Czasem bywa i tak, że szczoteczka wpada do toalety. Po wyciągnięciu akcesorium to nadaje się tylko do wyrzucenia, ponieważ żadne zabiegi czyszczące i odkażające nie usuną zanieczyszczeń fekalnych ze szczelin, które znajdują się na łączeniu plastików oraz w miejscu przytwierdzenia kępek włosia do główki. Bakterii gnilnych pojawia się bardzo dużo na wilgotnych szczoteczkach przechowywanych w szczelnie zamykanych pojemnikach.
• Gatunki wywołujące zapalenia jamy ustnej – jeśli w jamie ustnej toczy się proces chorobowy, wywołujące go bakterie na pewno znajdą się na szczoteczce. Między włóknami mogą zatem znajdować się bakterie próchnicy i chorób przyzębia, ale także mikroflora odpowiedzialna za powstawanie aft i zajadów.
• Wirusy chorób żołądkowo-jelitowych, grypy oraz wirusy HIV, zapalenia wątroby, HPV – wszystkie można znaleźć na szczoteczkach. Z uwagi na to, że wirusy nie należą do świata ożywionego, mogą długo pozostawać poza ustrojem bez szkody dla ich funkcji. Umycie zębów szczoteczką osoby zarażonej np. wirusem HIV, w przypadku uszkodzenia śluzówki jamy ustnej, rodzi ryzyko przeniesienia zakażenia przez krew.
